VVA CHAPTER 936
December 2004
PRESIDENT'S CORNER
On Veterans Day, November 11th, members of the American Legion Post 199 in Woodstock and members of the VFW post 2447 in Edinburg coordinated a memorial service in honor of all our veterans. I was glad to see so many members from our Chapter. The members of the Honor Guard looked sharp. I have attended this ceremony many times over the years and I believe citizen participation is growing.
There are several projects in the planning stages for Veterans Memorials. One of the projects is taking place in Mount Jackson. The memorial is planned to be located in the center of town, on the spot of the old police station. Many of the exact plans are still being reviewed. There will be a public hearing on the memorial, which will take place during the second week of December, the 10th or 11th, in Mount Jackson. Our membership has voted to contribute to this project. Myself, Roger Stevens, and Martin Ritenour had the pleasure to meet with the Mayor of Mount Jackson, Mr Joe Williams, a veteran himself. Mr. Williams’ enthusiasm for this project was very obvious as was his pride in Mount Jackson. When this memorial is completed everyone will be proud. Thank you, Mount Jackson!
We will keep you informed on this project as it develops and moves forward. We told Mayor Williams our Chapter would be proud to participate in fundraising events and other functions. This memorial is going to be very nice and will be a great contribution to the historical significance of Mount Jackson. Many veterans and their families have contributed so much from this community.
Ron Zerkel informed me about an outstanding project under way in Winchester. A POW/MIA Memorial is being planned, to be placed in Jim Barrett Park. Information about the details was covered by the Northern Virginia Daily Record. I have all the information concerning the project manager and committee chairman. Once again, I am sure we will be happy to assist in this project and make a contribution. The theme of the memorial is POW/MIA’s and the group identified with this project is the Rolling Thunder Organization.
On Saturday, November 6th, myself, Roger Stevens, and Jon Clark, went to the Golden Corral Restaurant for breakfast with a group of veterans who meet every month to share each other’s company. We had a great time, met more veterans, and had the opportunity to introduce ourselves and our Chapter. This group of veterans is a very enjoyable group and very proud. Several within the group expressed a desire to join the Vietnam Veterans of America, our Chapter. This is the type of brotherhood that is so meaningful.
The State Council meeting is scheduled for December 3rd -5th in Virginia Beach. My self, Jon Clark, and Roger Stevens will be attending as your delegates and will report back to you directly.
Please don’t forget membership renewal as it becomes due. Anyone with any information about a veteran or a family member who may be under the weather, please inform us so we may offer a helping hand. Don’t forget, I have the maps of Vietnam if you want one. Members who would like the newsletter delivered by e-mail, Roger needs current e-mail addresses.
My thanks to everyone and their families.

The Chapter also voted to give certificates of appreciation to the following people/organizations who supported us during the formation of our Chapter or supported us during the VVA State Council recently held in Woodstock:
The Chapter also agreed to present Carol Stevens, the wife of our Vice President her first years dues as a member of the Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America for her outstanding work on our web site.
We voted NO to the possible resolution that might be brought before the State Council to amend the VVA National Constitution to recognize the Confederate Veterans of the Civil War as a separate entity. We are all veterans and feel no need to identify a separate group.
Charlie Towe donated a flag that depicts the unit emblems for many of the major army units that served in Vietnam.
Russ Hasler presented a proposed design for our Chapter hats and the possibility of obtaining a wind blazer with the same design.

1 7-9 pound fully cooked smoked ham (shank, with bone) Whole cloves 1 cup apricot preserves 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard (spicy is best) 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves Pinch ground ginger Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Use a very sharp knife and cut fatty surface of ham in a large diamond pattern about 1/8"-1/4" deep. Insert whole cloves in each diamond, using as many as desired. Place the ham in a large roasting pan (at least 13x9x2). In a small bowl, combine apricot preserves, mustard, ground cloves and ginger; spread all over ham. Pour about 1 cup of water into the bottom of the pan. Bake about 25 minutes per pound or until internal temperature reaches 140 degrees on an instant-read thermometer.
Remove ham from the pan to a platter; tent with foil and let rest at least 30 minutes. Using a sharp carving knife, carefully cut and remove and discard the fatty layer from the ham. Cut away and discard any burned portion from the lean edges. Slice and serve warm. Enjoy more of Shaboom’s recipes at www.shaboomskitchen.com. -------------------------------------------- ![]()
