VVA CHAPTER 936
August 2005
PRESIDENT'S CORNER
I continue on the concept of awareness of being registered in the Veteran’s Administration. I point out that the procedure is a tricky one and somewhat of an inconvenience. Overall the procedure is very worthwhile. The “Agent Orange Screening Process” is simple and a great way to get face to face with a doctor and explain your issues. The VFW June’s magazine outlined the steps necessary. Once again, a simple move is to contact me and I’ll place you in contact directly with all the necessary service representatives and VA personnel. Please consider the importance of this and please don’t wait. I plan to outline the procedures somewhat more in a future newsletter. Please call me and we’ll get you into the action.
The raffle is coming along well. Roger Stevens, Charlie Towe, and myself attended the Marine Corps Band presentation in Orkney Springs on Sunday, July 10th. It was a lot of fun and we met so many interesting people. The raffle sales went well and it was a pleasure to once again listen to the Marine Corps Band.
George Rogers and myself attended a Rebel’s baseball game on Friday, July 1st in an attempt to sell more tickets, and we did quite well.
George Rogers has the tickets. Myself and George are available to anyone in order to deliver the needed amount of tickets. Remember, the planned drawing is Veteran’s Day, November 11th, in Woodstock. With a good effort this can be a success and we will have funds available to be able to reach out to needy veteran’s. his is a total joint effort by all our members. Everyone’s input is a must. Thanks for the enthusiasm and great help. I am proud of our Chapter.
On Saturday, July 2nd, we participated in the Bryce Fest at Bryce Resort. The people connected to Bryce Resort went out of their way to see that our Chapter had one of the finest locations. for our set-up. We were right in the middle of the event with great exposure to everyone participating. We sold more raffle tickets and had a great time. The coordinator of the event has advised us that we will have the same location next year. This was the second time we participated in this event.
On the 4th of July, Roger Stevens and myself were entered in the New Market 4th of July parade. We were in Rogers truck, all decorated with American Flags and our Chapter banner. We took 2nd place in a contest we didn’t even know we were competing in.
There will be no scheduled meeting in August. At our last meeting we all voted to dispense with the August meeting due to vacations, etc.
Two additional events are coming up in August and September. In August the Shenandoah County Fair is scheduled to take place. Our Chapter, the VFW, and the American Legion are looking forward to being able to set up representation at the Fair. The issue in the past has been the cost. This time, hopefully, the expense issue will be taken care of. It would be great to set up a table there, even for just a day. It would be great exposure and a great opportunity to reach out to other veterans. As the information develops, I’ll pass it on by phone and e-mail. Thanks again.
September is the scheduled “State Council” meeting. Roger Stevens, Ken Watts, and myself will be attending. It is scheduled for the weekend of September 9-11. Everyone is welcome to attend. We have continually had excellent representation at these meetings. It is a great way to keep up on veterans issues, agent orange, asbestos, education and many other programs. Besides, it’s a great way to stay in touch with our fellow Virginia VVA Members.
We will be participating in the Mount Jackson 3rd Annual Apple Harvest Festival and Craft Show, scheduled for Friday, October 7th to Sunday, October 9th. More on this event at a later date.
Please don’t let me forget another scheduled event which will be at the Shenandoah Caverns, American Celebration, scheduled for September 24th and 25th. More on this later.
Our Chapter has been busy with community events. We have been getting great exposure. People here in our community are actually, by word of mouth, spreading the word about our Chapter. The great support we are receiving from the VFW Post 2447 and the American Legion Post 199 is just outstanding. I believe we are all proud of this success in placing veterans up front and emphasizing veterans issues and patriotism. Patriotism has a price, consisting in the obligation to exercise it.
At our last meeting, Roger Stevens pointed out that our Chapter didn’t have the Chapter Secretary position filled. Truthfully, we were not able to keep the position filled so we generally shared the responsibility of secretary, and we survived. After Roger pointed this fact out, Ken Watts expressed his desire to take over the position. Ken has just retired from the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Martinsburg. He is extremely active in veteran issues and brings to our Chapter a wealth of information and insight. Besides, Ken is a dedicated veteran with a true pride of love of country.. I thank you so much Ken on behalf of our Chapter membership.
In closing, I hope everyone enjoys the summer. Please call if anyone has a veteran issue or just to say hello! Thanks to everyone for their support to the Chapter. Please remembering your prayers several of our Chapter members who will appreciate your prayers and thoughts.
Hope to see everyone at our next meeting, September 17th in the new Bobby Bowman Hall at the VFW in Edinburg. Please try to bring another veteran.
Vietnam Veterans of America Condemns Frivolous Use of the Purple Heart
"Millions of American fighting men and women have been awarded the Purple Heart since it was introduced by Gen. George Washington in 1782," Corey, a Purple Heart recipient who was severely disabled by his wounds in the Vietnam War, said. "That award honors the service and sacrifice of those who put their lives on the line for our country and were wounded in action. It is unconscionable to me—and is an insult to everyone who has served the nation in the military—to trivialize the Purple Heart in this way."
Congress Ready to Approve $1.5 Billion More for Veterans Health Benefits
Negotiators for the two chambers settled on the amount already approved by the Senate - which comes on top of $28 billion already approved for the budget year ending Sept. 30 - after key House lawmakers said they had lost faith in the VA's estimates. A final vote is expected this week.
The House originally passed a separate $975 million bill to close the veterans health care shortfall. That step was based on administration estimates. Only days later, the administration boosted those cost estimates by $300 million. That was the latest of a string of ever-increasing VA estimates of the size of the problem.
Air Force Officers MIA From Vietnam War are Identified
They are Col. James W. Lewis of Marshall, Texas, and Maj. Arthur D. Baker of San Antonio, Texas, both Air Force. Lewis is to be buried in Marshall on August 13, and Baker is to be buried in Longview, Texas on July 29.
On April 7, 1965, Lewis and Baker led a flight of four B-57B Canberra aircraft on an interdiction mission over Xiangkhoang Province, Laos. After their B-57 initiated an attack run into heavy clouds, Lewis radioed his plane was outbound away from the target. There was no further radio or visual contact with the crew, and search and rescue missions failed to yield any evidence of the two men or their aircraft. Although the cause of the crash is unknown, enemy fire and bad weather are believed to be contributing factors.
CHAIRMAN BUYER SEEKS TO RESOLVE OUTPATIENT SCHEDULING CONCERNS
The July 8 report, "Audit of the Veterans Health Administration's Outpatient Scheduling Procedures," used survey data gathered by VA's IG in eight VA medical facilities for the week of June 21-27, 2004. Initiated by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson, it found that VA health care schedulers often failed to correctly schedule appointments. It also found that facility directors did not have accurate data on patient waiting lists.
DOD Releases Study on Link Between Agent Orange and Diabetes
The Air Force Health Study summarizes the results of the 2002 physical examination of 1,951 veterans, which is the final examination of the 20-year epidemiological study.

FROM SHABOOM’S KITCHEN
No ties are allowed----if a man wears a tie, he must take it off (or the waiter cut it off), attach your business card, and hang it up with the hundreds of ties already hanging all over the place. What fun! And, the steaks are absolute mah-velous!!
Serves approximately 8
Drain beans and place into a Dutch oven or large kettle. Add onion garlic, chiles, chili powder or other seasoning, cumin and black pepper. Mix well and add water. Nestle the ham bone into the mixture and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Add salt and continue simmering, stirring occasionally, adding additional water if needed, another 1/2 to 1 hour or until beans are tender.
To serve, remove ham bone and discard. Ladle beans into large serving bowl and serve family style.
